Chitradurga

Karnataka Cities :- Bangalore || Bijapur || Chitradurga || Mysore || Srirangapatna

Chitradurga TourismThis famous hill - Fort town, 200 kms away frombangalore on the Pune-Bangalore highway, is also known as the "Place of Stones"- Kallina Kote.

Having come under the rule of feudatory dynasty of Vijayanagar called the Nayak Paleyagars, this strategically placed town was ideal from the military point of view.

The City of Chitradurga itself is said to have been named after the Fort of Seven Rounds (of Walls) of ramparts, a picturesque sight.

In the hill fort there are temples of the Sampige Siddeshwara, Hidimbeshwara (a cave shrine), Ekanathamma, Phalguneshwara, Gopalakrishan etc., amidst thick rocky surroundings.

A trip to Chitradurga would not be completed without visiting the ancient town of Harihar (Now in Davanagere District), on the right bank of the great Tungabhadra river.

Visit the famous Hariheshwar here. Built in the Hoysala style in 1223, the temple image of Harihar stands 4 feet tall with its left portion representing Lord vishnu and the right side Shiva.

Other places of interest in Chitradurga District are Brahmagiri, Hiriyur, Vanivilas Sagar, a dam built across the Vedavati river, near Marikanive in Hiriyur Taluk.

On the way to Jogimatti (one of the highest points in this area) to beat the heat and enjoy a picnic, you will pass a lovely water fall - the Himavat Kedaya.
