Karera Bird Sanctuary is located in Madhya Pradesh and is about 55 kilometres from Shivpuri. Shivpuri was once the summer capital of the Scindia rulers of Gwalior. Karera Bird Sanctuary is a bird watcher's delight. The sanctuary is famous for its celebrity inhabitant Indian bustard and is believed to be last refuge of this bird. The studies conducted on the Indian bustard here have revealed that there are three type of bustards found in the sanctuary. The three types of bustards you may come across are Indian bustard, bearded bustard and colored bustard.

Experts have recorded 245 species of birds in Karera Bird Sanctuary. Some of the birds you may come across in Karera Bird Sanctuary include teals, herons, Indian robins, pintails and gadwalls. There are a number of water birds like egrets, spoonbills and black-bellied river terns. Karera Bird Sanctuary is also a temporary refuge to migratory birds. Dihaila Jeel in the sanctuary play host to migratory birds, who flock the sanctuary every year.

Blackbuck is the celebrity animal in the sanctuary and at the last count there number was 2000. Indian gazelle is another animal that you can see at Karera Bird Sanctuary.

Around Karera Bird Sanctuary
There are a number of places near Karera Bird Sancturay that you can visit. Madhav Shivpuri National Park is one such place that you can visit. The park is about 45 kilometres from the sanctuary. You can also explore the historic city of Shivpuri on your tour to Karera Bird Sanctuary; Shivpuri is about 55 kilometres from the sanctuary. Jhansi, about 44 kilometres away is another place where you can visit.

Gwalior is the nearest airport to reach Karera Bird Sanctuary. Gwalior is about 150 kilometres away. Jhansi, 44 kilometres away is the nearest railhead. Karera is well connected by road with Shivpuri and Jhansi.
